History of Mojito

history

In the end of 16th century a Carribean pirate added lime and mint to the traditional alcohol made of sugar cane aguardiente to make a cocktail Draque that is the origin of Mojito. It is generally known that in the latter half of 19th century the company Bacardi named the cocktail “Mojito” using white rum instead of aguardiente.

It is said that it was named after “mojo” that means “to enchant with magic” or “mojo sauce” flavoring from the Canary Islands.

However, this is not sure since the story could be spread by the company Bacardi. In Cuba, after the Cuban Revolution they started to prepare Mojito with rum of Havana Club since Bacardi withdrew from Cuba.
